S is for Sensory Learning

Welcome to my Blogging from A to Z April Challenge for 2019! The A to Z Challenge is a blogging event held each April. Bloggers create posts from A to Z beginning on April 1st and ending on April 30th. There is a post scheduled for each day of the month (except for Sundays) with each day corresponding to a sequential letter of the alphabet.

It's the start of the 4th week of the A to Z Blogging Challenge and we are getting back into things with the letter S. S is for a toddler favorite...Sensory Learning.

There are so many ways to go about sensory learning. It's just about having them feel and experience as many different things as possible. You typically can use just about anything you have on hand.

Well...when you live in northern Minnesota, the thing you have most on hand is often snow. With the temperatures outside often at -20F or lower, playing in the snow outside is not always possible. So...we brought it inside.

After scooping up a bowlful from the front yard, we simply sat it on the floor and let him at it. He smooshed and smashed it to his heart's content. He shook the cold from his hands, he licked a chunk of snow from his hands. It was a blast.

The next time we brought the snow in, we added a component. We drove his vehicles through the bowl, we used his shape blocks to press the snow into shapes he could smash with his hands. Just as with the first time, he was thrilled with the experience.

Never underestimate the power of something simple. Anything they've never felt before can be something to bring a smile. And if it feels interesting, it can entertain over and over. We've talked before about the fun of playing with pasta noodles. Snow was obviously a hit. Dry rice and beans work just as well.

Sensory play is a toddler parent's best friend.
