Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - Halloween 2013

Well, we survived another Halloween season. Barely. It was a mad dash to the finish, but we managed to pull it off with our yard display of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I did fall short on my original plan (as I had five woodland creatures who never managed to get carved), but all of the major characters made it. We were still assembling as our first trick-or-treaters showed up, but we finished none the less. Things turned out pretty well, I think.

Our little garden patch managed to yield six decent sized pumpkins in its first year. We also gathered up pumpkins from Patti and Owen as well as my Uncle Lance and Aunt Amanda. It's so nice having others who are willing to donate to the cause. In the end, we made a sweet deal with one of the local farms for the remaining pumpkins, making our total pumpkin bill this year a nice inexpensive $20. We plan on continuing to grow pumpkins on our own in order to make this an affordable endeavor that we can keep on doing each year.

As with last year, we divided the yard into three sections. In the courtyard, we had the Evil Queen (complete with heart) and her Magic Mirror...

In the left side lawn, we had the first of our two Snow Whites with the Old Witch holding her poisoned apple.

And (as with last year), the right side lawn held the major scene: the second Snow White with all Seven Dwarfs and an assortment of woodland critters.

Doc...

Sleepy...

Sneezy...

Bashful...

Grumpy...

Happy...

and, of course... Dopey...

As for woodland creatures, we ended up with three rabbits, three deer, a raccoon, a squirrel, two chipmunks, and a skunk. (Small sampling pictured.)

We had a great turnout on Halloween night and had quite a few repeat visitors who have seen our yard displays in past years. Everyone seemed to enjoy the setup. It's nice to hear the compliments after all of the hard work, but as much as we do it for everyone else, we really do a lot of it just for ourselves. That's what happens when Halloween is your favorite holiday.

I've spent the last couple of days catching up on some much needed sleep and just flat out relaxing. It's been nice to go to bed without pumpkin under my fingernails and to have a nice clean nook table.

The yard display is still up, but the weather is starting to take its toll. We'll probably be disassembling over the next couple of days and chucking the noncarved pumpkins into the back garden patch so that they can sprout a crop for next year. The pieces and parts that serve as accessories will get stowed away in their Tupperware totes and pumpkin planning will give way to Christmas present planning, but we had a good time and I'm pretty darned happy about how the carvings turned out. Hopefully everyone else enjoyed the display as much as we did.

Happy belated Halloween!
