2012 BOTY - Lift by Kelly Corrigan

Well...here we are...January 3rd and I've finished book #1 for the year. Look at that...according to Goodreads, I am currently 1% ahead of schedule. Woohoo!

So...this is how you know that you can't judge a book by it's cover. I know...I'm a sucker, but I thought the green cover with the butterfly was just pretty. (Insert facepalm here.)

I ended up giving Kelly Corrigan's Lift a rating of 2 out of 5. The book is very short (less than 100 pages no matter what version you get) - a nice plus for starting out the year with a bang. However, now I'm thinking that maybe having a synopsis on Goodreads that is nearly as long as your book says bad things. Live and learn.

Lift is an open letter to Corrigan's daughters, Georgia and Claire. The title itself comes from her analogy to life being like hang gliding. Basically, the idea is that enjoyment among the chaos and taking risks to have a good life. It sounds like a good idea at first.

I'm not sure what I was expecting here, but this wasn't it. While it's cute in some places and can momentarily become endearing, it doesn't really have a good flow and seems to wander aimlessly from one topic to the next. This may have served as a nice premise for a book, but there really needed to be more development. The family stories and lessons are nice, but there should be more, and there should be some order.

Corrigan does have a nice style of writing and I have to assume that this book was her attempt to fulfill a two book contract with a publisher as her other book, The Middle Place, has received rave reviews. Then again...so has Lift. "Funny and irresistibly exuberant." Ahem. Really Oprah? Really? I trust your book reviews like I need a hole in my head.

All in all, unfortunately this was a disappointing start to the year. I'd really like to have that two hours of my life back.

  1. I, too, would be suckered in by the cover. So pretty! But 100 pages? RED FLAG.
