Reorganization Phase II - Schedule

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that it was time to reorganize a few things in my life. I've let myself get completely off track the past couple of months. I blame the heat. And summer vacation. And I finally got fed up with it. In May, things were running nice and smooth around here: chores were getting finished, blog posts were getting posted, projects were being made; it was like a well oiled machine. Now? Total chaos.

When the kid is in school, things have to be organized or we're just a mess. With no homework to get done and no strict bedtime to enforce, it's like Lord of the Flies over here. Messes everywhere, nothing gets accomplished. My nightly schedule has gone to hell in a handbasket. I do nearly nothing for hours after work. And that was fine for a while. It started mid-June. It's been six weeks now and I think maybe it's time to finally get off my can.

If you've been around here for very long, then you know that I have a lot of hobbies. I spread myself a little thin sometimes. But it's also easy for some crafts to get occasionally neglected. I have a scrapbook room people. A room. Just for scrapbook stuff. The last time I scrapbooked? I'm pretty sure it's been at least eighteen months. That's freaking ridiculous. And it's not because I don't like scrapbooking anymore. I just can't get myself in the mood.

It's this kind of crap that has made me decide that getting myself "in the mood" for specific hobbies or tasks is bologna. I need to make myself a schedule. With little goals. Because I may have all the grandiose plans in the world, but the whole train will fall apart if I make my goals too big.

I am being bluntly realistic with the project. Are you ready for this? There is. no. plan. Yup. No hard plan. I'm not exactly sure what I want the final picture to look like. I'm going to go in small phases until I get my schedule the way that I want it. The first step for that? I'm giving myself a ten step program.

Ten rules. Some of them are more fun than others. I'm going to stick to them and do my best and then reevaluate in three months to see if I need to push myself harder or create new and better habits. Day one for this first phase is August 1st. Reevaluation day is November 1st. Here's the plan...

1. Make progress on one item each from my 101 in 1001 and my 50 x 50 lists each week. Progress. That's all I'm asking for. If I complete something, fan-freaking-tastic. This is low pressure.

2. Read at least two nights a week for a minimum of an hour. This should be easy for me. I love to read. But I've totally let life, and laziness, and iPad apps get in the way lately. This minimum might increase, but for right now...this is what I want.

3. Continue to exercise at least three times a week. I've been doing this since June 1st and so far it's going okay. I say okay because, while I've lost some fat and converted it to muscle, I have yet to lose more than two pounds. And even that isn't consistent. If you average, I'm probably at the same weight. Annoying. But I do feel better and there's less cottage cheese glued to my thighs and butt. So that's nice. Plus, I'm quite enjoying my Wii Zumba game. I don't care what exercise I do, as long as it's a minimum of 15-20 minutes three times a week. That's all I'm asking of myself. I don't need to train for a marathon, I just need to move. I'm an adult. I should be able to handle this.

4. Participate in at least two of my hobbies (other than reading) at least once a week. Let me be clear that the word "participate" was a very conscious choice. I was going to say "work on", but decided that anything with the word "work" being used will make me want to run screaming. So it's low pressure again. LOW. I just have to make an effort. It's like kindergarten. Baby steps. I could sew; I can scrapbook; maybe I'll cook something, or write. Don't care what it is...just do something. Well...actually, do two somethings. Mix it up a little.

5. While we're on the topic of hobbies, actively do something in each of my chosen hobbies once a month. Because it's ridiculous to have hobbies if you're just going to ignore them. This one is going to push me for a smidge bit more commitment. I'm going to make a list here. For each hobby I list, I will produce something to do with that hobby within a month's time. Every month. But again, it doesn't have to be anything major. Just progress. Ready?

Blogging - this should be easy or I'm really screwing up
Cooking - again...once a month should totally be possible
Crafts - DIY, paper, etc.; actually use Pinterest for something
Creative Writing - the blog doesn't count here
Gaming - any...board, computer, video
Photography - preferably with something other than my iPhone
Reading - another easy one. I need small wins.
Quilting - for fun or for profit; either way
Scrapbooking - I need to use my mountains of product
Sewing - clothes, toys, presents, doesn't matter

6. Do at least two loads of laundry a week. This is a totally low goal. According to my household chore schedule, I'm supposed to do a load a day. I'm totally out of practice on that. So I'm going to have to wean myself back into it. I'm starting with two loads. Eventually I may find my way back to at least four loads a week. If I manage that, we're totally cool. No one will go naked and everyone will have towels and socks. Win-win.

7. Cook dinner at least two nights a week. This means actual cooking. Not putting something in the microwave or deeming it a leftovers night. Real, honest-to-goodness cooking. I should be able to handle that, but I'm putting it down here anyway. I have to keep myself accountable.

8. Complete a household chore at least three days a week. Laundry isn't included here. This is cleaning stuff. Again, I have a household chore schedule that gives me stuff to do daily. That hasn't been happening, but it used to. And it was a good schedule. And things stayed clean. So I'm working my way back to it. Doesn't matter which chores on the list I choose, as long as they get done. Oh...and making the bed doesn't count either.

9. Have a family night at least once a week. We're highly independent over here. We all have our own hobbies and we do a lot by ourselves. But we need to find our way to each other at least once a week. So we need to convene together in some form of activity for a minimum of two hours each week. That's the goal. Doesn't need to be anything fancy...just time together. Darian spends the majority of his weekends with his mom, so I'm specifically meaning this goal for weekdays. Stuff done as a family on weekends doesn't count.

10. Have a couple's night at least twice a month. See #9. We're independent. We're also busy. Sometimes my schedule and Collin's don't line up very well. But we need to spend more time together. This one can be a weekend one, but I want us to spend at least two hours doing something together at least twice a month. This can be an actual out of the house date or it can just be spending time together at home. But it needs to be just him and me with uninterrupted time. This isn't family time or time with friends. It's just us. We need it.

And there you have it. Phase two. Hopefully I've made the steps small enough that I can reach them, but big enough that I feel I've accomplished something when I hit the three month check in mark. Time will tell.

What kind of things do you set as goals to keep yourself on track?

High Summer Read-a-Thon Wrap Up AND Upcoming Read-a-Thon Plans

The High Summer Read-a-Thon has come and gone. And while I did catch up on my stats a little bit, I still muffed this one up just about as well as I did Wicked Wildfire. Apparently I'm not doing so awesome at summer read-a-thons, which is a little bit of a problem since I have a few more to go before school starts back up.

Up next...

Next week is the Monster Pick-Your-Thon hosted by The Book Monsters. This one is a new one to me and provides a choice between a read-a-thon or a review-a-thon. I'm sticking with the reading for now. But...I'm thinking I need to go with updates every other day and finally sneak some crafting posts in here. It's been a while.

And then...

Bout of Books

Bout of Books 11 starts August 18th! I've been waiting for this one for a while. I loved Bout of Books 10 so I'm ready to roll on this one again.

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 18th and runs through Sunday, August 24th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 11 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team

If you haven't done Bout of Books before, you need to. It's probably been my favorite read-a-thon so far. There are a lot of participants and good challenges. I met quite a few awesome book bloggers last time.

I haven't figured out my goals for either of the upcoming read-a-thons yet. Based on my last two efforts, I need to reevaluate expectations for myself when the temperatures are nice and the kiddo is home from school.

If you're ever curious about the read-a-thons I participate in (or want to see what prior stats have been)...there's a page for that. It also serves to prove that I'm not always a lazy read-a-thoner.

Want to see how badly I did this time and how hard the kid kicked my butt? Here we go...

Elle's Final Stats

Currently Reading:

This one is reading much faster than The Grapes of Wrath. Thank goodness. I expect I'll have it finished within the next day or two. Good thing, since I have about six more library books to finish before next Monday. (I have a feeling that I'll be renewing a couple.)

Total Time Read: 10 hours 32 minutes (632 minutes)

Goal: 17 hours (1020 minutes).

Total Pages Read: 504

Goal: 1200 pages.

Total Books Finished: 1

Goal: 4 books.

Much better than my Wicked Wildfire stats, but still pathetic. I will have to redeem myself before the summer is out.

Darian's Final Stats

The kid kept up his stellar reading, but then wimped out on the weekend...only in terms of tracking though. He still read more or less all day, but he didn't give me his numbers for Saturday and on Sunday he didn't even bother to write down his times or pages. He figured he'd already met his goal so he wasn't worried beyond that. (I think maybe he didn't want me to feel quite as far behind as I already was. Such a nice kid. Who am I kidding...he was totally being lazy.)

Total Time Read: More than 27 hours 21 minutes (1641 minutes)

Goal: 1300 minutes

Total Pages Read: More than 1847

Goal: 1300 pages

Total Books Finished: 5

Goal: 5 books.

Since I have a week read-a-thon free, I may actually get up some other posts. Amazing! I have a quick and dirty project to post and I'll be putting up the next post in my reorganization mini-series. (You thought I forgot, didn't you?)

I'll be starting another custom quilt order this weekend (this time a photo rag quilt), but I'll also hopefully have a new set of hand puppets (see the prior sets here and here) to show off in the next couple of weeks. It will depend how much time the new order takes up. Worst case scenario, they'll be ready to roll before the end of August. Pinky promise.

Wicked Wildfire Read-a-Thon: Wrap Up

Wicked Wildfire wrapped up a couple of days ago, but I'm just now getting to our final post. Why? Well...because I'm a procrastinator and I like watching House, M.D. Yup. Pure, unadulterated laziness.

So...how about a wrap-up of my worst read-a-thon showing ever? I am not super happy with my numbers on this one. Sad enough that I didn't meet any of my goals even half way, I also got bested by the kid...who had six fewer participation days. Pathetic. Let's hope I do better with the Wonderfully Wicked Read-a-Thon that My Shelf Confessions will be hosting from October 17th to 27th.

High Summer Read-a-Thon: Update 2

As promised, I'm sticking it out to put up this post just after midnight. It'll be short and sweet so I can crash out for the night, but I did push through and get some additional reading finished. It was pretty much too little, too late for the Wicked Wildfire Read-a-Thon, but at least it will help my stats for High Summer and maybe give me a chance of making it to my goals for one of the two.

Wicked Wildfire Read-a-Thon: Update 2

We're a day late on this update thanks to a nice, painful fibro flare up for me last night. But...better late than never. As the story seems to go with this read-a-thon, my stats totally suck. Life just managed to get in the way this time. It's the first time I've had such a sad showing during a read-a-thon we've done on the blog.

The good news is that Darian is once again totally rocking this thing. His love for reading is a wonderful thing. I'm so glad that I can keep encouraging him to find great books to read.

Elle's Current Stats

Currently Reading:

This book may be the death of me. I've fell asleep in it four times now. Horrible. It's been a long time since I've had a snoozefest like this one. It's not a horrible book, but so far it's really not a good one. So much for me liking classics.

Total Time Read: 5 hours 45 minutes (345 minutes)

Goal: 21 1/2 hours (1300 minutes).

Total Pages Read: 245

Goal: 1600 pages.

Total Books Finished: 0

Goal: 6 books.

Darian's Current Stats

Currently Reading:

Total Time Read: 17 hours 16 minutes. (1036 minutes)

Goal: 900 minutes

Total Pages Read: 1038

Goal: 900 pages

Total Books Finished: 2

Goal: 4 books.

I still have a few hours left to pump into this thing. Obviously there's no way that I'm making my goals, but I'm going to at least try and put a little bit more blue in those boxes.

We'll be back after midnight with a High Summer Read-a-Thon update and then the final Wicked Wildfire stats will be posted on Friday night.

Happy reading everyone!

High Summer Read-a-Thon Update (End of Day 2)

We're still trucking along with our concurrent read-a-thons. Today we're posting progress for the High Summer Read-a-Thon hosted by Seasons Reading.

I continue to totally suck it up and Darian is tromping all over me. Of course, he has the advantage of reading for between four and six hours while he hangs out at either my or Collin's office while we work. I miss that summer freedom.

In fact, he was doing so well with his reading while at my office today that he decided to do nothing but play with LEGOs when we got home. He bought himself a couple of new LEGO movie sets with his birthday money, so he was in the nice, cool basement building away for a few hours.

As for me, it was an interesting day. I had a small Facebook explosion with interest in my Custom Toddler Memory Quilt. I spent some time messaging some potential clients and giving out some quotes. I may have a few new projects line up here shortly. I'm very excited about that possibility. (Along those lines, if you're wanting something I made here on the blog, feel free to contact me. I am able to custom make just about everything you see on here and I would love to do it.) It would be lovely to be able to do more crafting at home.

This week though, I should probably focus a little more on my reading if I have any intention of making my goals. Ready to see my pathetic stats?

The Very Inspiring Blogger Award

I learned a couple of things today:
  1. My "contact me" link apparently wasn't sending those contact forms to my email like it was supposed to.
  2. I look like a huge jerk for not responding to the two messages I had.
  3. Karsyn made me a freaking awesome button (because she is also freaking awesome). It is now over in the side bar.
  4. Diana over at Strahbary's Fields nominated me for a blogging award...a month ago. Stupid Google Forms.

So...a big THANK YOU to Karsyn and Diana. I'm SOOOO sorry that I didn't see your messages until today. I think I fixed the problem. I hope.

And now I'm going to do my duty and follow through on the award that Diana so thoughtfully nominated me for. I first found Diana's blog during the A-to-Z Blogging Challenge this year. She's a self-described geek and her first A to Z post was on Alice in Wonderland. That was all it took. (I just so love Alice.) Her blog is an entertaining hodgepodge of books, cooking, and miscellaneous geekery. It's fabulous. Go on...check her out.

With any blogging award comes a give and take...so there are rules. These ones are pretty simple. Ready?

Rules

  1. Thank and link the amazing person who nominated you.
  2. List the rules and display the award.
  3. Share seven facts about yourself.
  4. Nominate 15 other amazing blogs and comment on their posts to let them know they have been nominated.
  5. Optional: Proudly display the award logo on your blog and follow the blogger who nominated you.

Seven Facts

  1. I would trade my big house on a little bit of land for a little house on a big piece of land. I crave wide open spaces. I've tried several times to convince Collin that we should move to Montana.
  2. Collin and I are both small business owners. We're both self-employed. This is not always awesome. It's also why Collin keeps telling me that Montana is not in the cards. Drat.
  3. When it comes to literary things, I am freaking crazy about anything Alice in Wonderland. Seriously. I love Alice. I've read several books simply because they were modern tellings/adaptations of Alice. It's my own little personal fandom.
  4. I love to craft and write. I've contemplated going back to school several times to get my English degree. I have several novel starts in progress. None of them are Alice based. :)
  5. I am completely asocial. Seriously. I love my blog and other bloggers because the web-based world lets me be more open and friendly. I'm actually kind of a hermit. I have social anxiety and I don't do well in large groups. Even my best friends (of which there are few) will tell you that I'm socially awkward and avoid get-togethers. It drives Collin a little nuts.
  6. I have a ridiculous sweet tooth. I'm a dentist in "real life" so this is a total contradiction. My young cousin (who I gave a gigantic rainbow jar of Skittles for her 8th birthday), told me "You're a dentist! You can't like candy!" Well...I don't like candy, I love candy. I allow myself to continue this tomfoolery since I've never had a cavity.
  7. I drive a big truck. It's big and black and lifted. I look ridiculous trying to climb in when I'm wearing a skirt. Other than the gas mileage issue, I love driving it. I like being up above everyone else when I'm stuck in traffic. Keeps me from getting claustrophobic.

Awesomesauce Blogs You Need to Check Out
(Oh, also...you guys are nominated...)

Thanks again, Diana!

Oh...and Darian and I will be back in a couple of hours with another read-a-thon update!

Wicked Wildfire Read-a-Thon Update and High Summer Read-a-Thon Goals

Ready for things to get complicated? As of today, we are currently participating in two overlapping read-a-thons, Wicked Wildfire Read-a-Thon and High Summer Read-a-Thon.

I've been participating in the Wicked Wildfire Read-a-Thon since the 14th (although rather lamely), but Darian just returned home last night. So...he'll be putting in his stats from Sunday (the 20th) to the 24th and then participating fully with me for the High Summer Read-a-Thon.

Two read-a-thons means two sets of goals and stats. My goals for Wicked Wildfire have already been posted, so I'm just going to be listing my goals for High Summer here. Darian will be listing his goals for both. Additionally, I'll be posting his current progress for the Wicked Wildfire Read-a-Thon.

To keep things less complicated from here forward, we will alternate days. Tomorrow will be an update for High Summer and Wednesday will be Wicked Wildfire. Thursday it's back to High Summer, Friday will be the wrap up post for Wicked Wildfire, and then it's High Summer through the weekend. Whew.

Alright...let's get on with this atrociously confusing post.

Total Reading Time Goal : 17 hours (1020 minutes)

Total Pages Goal : 1200 pages

Completed Books Goal : 4

Planned Reading :

Bonus Books :

This list was transferred directly from my goals for Wicked Wildfire. However, I'm finding that I'm totally struggling with The Grapes of Wrath, so I may need to mix up my classics and contemporaries to keep myself from falling asleep (which has happened twice - nearly three times - with Grapes). I'll still be using the same books, but will probably be jumping back and forth between the "planned reading" and "bonus books" lists to keep things moving smoothly. Let's hope that plan works.

Darian's Goals for BOTH Read-a-Thons

Lost yet? I hope not. We'll be continuing on with our reads and will be back here tomorrow night with another update. The reading will work for both read-a-thons, but you'll be seeing progress bars for our stats based on the High Summer Read-a-Thon Goals. Whee!

Wicked Wildfire Read-a-Thon: Update 1

Poor, poor Wicked Wildfire Read-a-Thon. It's totally being neglected. There's been sad, sad amounts of reading this week. Today fared no better. My stats are pretty ugly, but I figured I should probably get an update post going.

I had bold plans for the day...they just didn't happen. Seems to be the theme for the week. I did manage to get up and participate in the Wicked Wildfire Twitter Chat, but it was all downhill from there. I situated myself on the couch for some hardcore reading, and then promptly fell asleep...for four hours. Who does that? I am blaming the heat.

After that, I managed to waylay myself further with dinner, margaritas, and some goofing around on my iPad. I am finally now settled in bed, but I can tell by the tequila induced headache I have brewing that there won't be much reading before I crash out for the day.

Ready to see how sad my reading progress has been? I'm totally ashamed by these numbers. Pathetic...

Currently Reading:

Minutes Read Today: 32 minutes

Total Time Read: 1 hours 14 minutes (74 minutes)

Goal: 21 1/2 hours (1300 minutes).

Pages Read Today: 18

Total Pages Read: 79

Goal: 1600 pages.

Books Finished Today: 0

Total Books Finished: 0

Goal: 6 books.

Ugh...maybe I should count the 50 pages I read to finish The Dressmaker as a finished book for read-a-thon stats. This is really looking sad.

I will get some reading in tomorrow, but not a lot. We have a couple of places to be in the afternoon. I'm hoping for two hours before I call it a day. Luckily, I do have Monday off and Darian will be home, so maybe we'll be able to have a reading day and make up for some of my slacking.

Oh...and I discovered today that Monday also starts another read-a-thon I had planned on joining. The High Summer Read-a-Thon over at Seasons of Reading runs from July 21st to 27th. So for half of next week my stats will be counting towards two different read-a-thons. Craziness. Maybe that will give me the push I need to get my reading out of the slump.
