C is for City

Writing about all of these great books is really making me hate the fact that I don't have a ton of free time to read what I want. Four more weeks and this semester is done. I can do this... Summer reading is ahead...

Because I'm feeling generous, today is another series post. C is for City because each of the books in Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments series begins with the word city. (It also doesn't hurt that her first and last name also happen to start with the letter of the day.)

Synopsis in a Sentence:

Teenage Shadowhunter Clary and her Shadowhunter friends fight demons, vampires, and faeries to save the modern world from the control of the evil Valentine.

About the Series:

This one is a young adult fantasy series and a little more juvenile than her Immortal Devices series, but it's awesome. Seriously. If you like anything at all in the young adult realm, you'll likely enjoy this one. Twilight fan? Yes. You'll like it. Harry Potter fan? Give it a whirl. Enjoy anything with supernatural beings? Read it. Don't really have a thing for supernatural beings? Neither did I, but seriously...it's good. If you read young adult fiction that moves anywhere into the dystopian or fantasy realms, pick it up and give it a try.

There are six books in the series and yes...you need to read them in order. Plan on staying up late with them though, they're the type that will hook you if you're not careful. The good news? They've all been released so you won't trap yourself in a series that hasn't been fully published.

I actually screwed up when I read the first book in this series. I had just finished the first book in Clare's Infernal Devices series when I realized that the second hadn't been published yet. Unwittingly, I picked up City of Bones and started reading when I realized that it too was part of a series. At that point, only four of the books had been released. Rats. I managed to grab ahold of the other two books as they were released slowly over the following two years. There will come a time when I need to read all six books in quick succession.
Something Special:

The first book was made into a movie. I have not yet seen the film, but City of Bones was released in 2013. Cinema audiences apparently gave it a B+. It didn't do as great in theaters as hoped and was given mediocre reviews, so the plans for a sequel were scrapped. The series now exists as the television show, Shadowhunters which has been renewed for a second season on Freeform (formerly ABC Family).

Why it Makes the List:

Cassandra Clare is a really good writer. These books read pretty quickly and there is a lot going on with them. If you're able to read them close together, the story line moves really well. I also really enjoy the parallels between this series and her Infernal Devices series. I'm not usually a gigantic fan of the whole paranormal thing, but this series was totally an exception. I very much enjoyed it and it's one that I will read again. Reread option = winner.

    1. Amelia -- I haven't seen Shadowhunters yet. I need to find a way to see it. I'm curious how they've put it together.
