Top Ten Retold Fairy Tales I Want to Read

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly event hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, created due to a fondness for lists. Each week they post a new Top Ten topic. After that, it's bloggers UNITE! Participate with your own Top Ten post, have fun, and get to know your fellow bloggers.

Happy Tuesday everyone! This week's Top Ten Tuesday topic is Retold Fairy Tales, more specifically the Top Ten Retold Fairy Tales that I haven't yet read, but want to.

I'm very much a lover of retold fairy tales. I wasn't really familiar with them until about two years ago and now it seems like there is just a massive insurgence available. I've read a small handful, but still have a very long list of ones I want to tackle. In fact, it's one of my ongoing challenges.

To put together this list, I perused my burgeoning TBR for those that were highest up on my "must read" radar. The only rule I imposed is that each author could only be represented once. You'll notice a slight imbalance in fairy tales that are represented. Things are heavily weighted towards all things Alice. Yes...I have a slight Alice in Wonderland obsession. She's my favorite.

The books are sequenced in alphabetical order this week. Let's check out what I've selected...

I have yet to read anything by Sarah J. Maas...a total reading sin. Though I have several of her books on my TBR, this one is the one I'm most interested in. It's become HUGELY popular among book bloggers lately and I'm itching to jump on the bandwagon.

My first Alice entry. I can hardly contain myself for this one. Gregory Maguire has a way of spinning a fairy tale that is just. so. good. The book comes out in the fall and I am getting totally antsy trying to get my hands on it.

I'll be honest, this first caught my eye for sheer cover love. It just looks so pretty. This one also comes out this fall and it's been gaining some steam. A retelling of Cinderella, the hype is definitely behind it. Let's hope it isn't wrong...

One of the "classic" retellings that gets recommended over and over again. It's a retelling of Beauty & the Beast. Alex Flinn has authored a small collection of retold fairy tales, but this is the one that seems to be the most popular.

Cinder (and the rest of the Lunar Chronicles) has been on my list for a very long time. This is one of those books that I need to quit putting off and just read.

I have had mixed feelings about this one. I'm interested in it, but there was some controversy a while back over the fact that it is in the group of books associated with James Frey (of the A Million Little Pieces debacle) and his book packaging company, Full Fathom Five. I still go back and forth on whether or not I'll pick this one up, but it's tempting enough to make it to this list.

This one recently returned to my radar. I have had it on my watch list for a while now, but just read a review of it earlier this week that pushed it right into the TBR. I need to stop reading reviews...the TBR is freaking ridiculous.

Alice book number two. Another one that's been on the list for a while and that has an entire series behind it. I will admit that part of the reason for putting this one off was the series component. I always have a knack for starting series books before they're all released and then I very sorely regret it.

Alice book number three. Darian picked this one up a while back. He gave it a "meh", but I really don't care...it's Alice. It's happening.

And last, but not least, Alice retelling number four. This is the second book in the White Rabbit Chronicles. The first one, Alice in Zombieland was great! It definitely wasn't what I was expecting, but I was pleasantly surprised. I'm actually kind of shocked that I haven't jumped on this one yet with as much as I enjoyed its predecessor.

Did any of my picks make your list? Have you read any of my Top Ten? What did you think? Point me in the direction of some good Alice reads and we will be forever friends...

  1. I loved Beastly! I also have The Looking Glass Wars on my TBR and Alice in Zombieland but I had no idea about After Alice. I love Gregory Maguire so that's gone straight on my wish list! Thanks!

  2. I so need to try the Alice in Zombieland books. I HAVE A HUGE ALICE OBSESSION TOO. And Splintered is so so incredible and perfect and creeeepy. Have you seen Tim Burton's Alice movie? It's like THAT. I love it so much. *flails* And I also want to read The Looking Glass Wars because ALICE. AWK! And and and...I know there's controversy around Dorothy Must Die and I don't actually understand exactly the badness, but THE BOOK IS SUPER GOOD REGARDLESS.

    1. Alice in Zombieland is awesome. If you like Alice, you'll enjoy it. So glad to meet another Alice obsesser. :) And now you have me even more worked up about Splintered. I also went and added like 5 more Alice retellings to my Goodreads TBR yesterday. I just can't get enough!!

    1. Yay for the storyteller approval! I keep hearing good things about the series, I just don't want to get caught in the middle an unfinished one again. I did that with BOTH of Cassandra Clare's series and that SUCKED.

  5. I LOVE Cinder. I am so pumped for the next book in the series, Winter, to be published. Highly recommend, since the cast of characters as the series progresses gets super fun.

    1. See...that's my only reservation. I don't want to get stuck in the middle of the series waiting for a publishing date. I've burnt myself SO MANY TIMES doing that.

  6. Cinder is my favorite retelling so far. And, I did enjoy The Looking Glass Wars (far more than the original stories).
