H is for Hood

I'm still trucking along with the Blogging from A to Z Challenge. It's been a really long week so far, so I unfortunately haven't been able to travel to check out very many other participants in the last two days, but I'm planning on making that up beginning tomorrow afternoon and carrying through the weekend. I'm sorry everyone! I will get to you soon...promise!

After yesterday's fairly labor intensive project, how about an easy one? These hooded towels can be put together in about twenty minutes and require very little sewing knowledge or skill...just my type of project.

To make each towel, you'll need one regular sized bath towel and one (well...technically 1/2) hand towel plus some way to sew them together. That's it.

Ready?

Start by laying your hand towel out horizontally.

Cut the hand towel in half. One of these halves will become your hood. The other half can be set aside to make another hooded towel. Because seriously, after you've seen how easy it is to make these, it will be your go to gift project.

Lay the hand towel onto the bath towel so that the two inside sides are touching. For me, light blue is inside, darker blue is outside.

You're going to sew the hand towel "hood" on making a French seam. First, stitch it down with the two inside pieces touching...

... Then flip it over and stitch across to make a nice pretty inside seam....

...while your outside seam looks totally professional.

Now you're going to sew the hood. You can either do this as a French seam as well, or just sew it together with a basic inside seam. The picture above shows a regular seam but... (little secret here) ... I didn't like the way that laid down, so I ripped it out and sewed a French seam instead (which is what you're seeing in the next picture).

All you have to do is bring the two unattached corners of the hand towel "hood" together and stitch down the seam.

Tada! You have a hood.

See...wasn't that easy? Using this method, your hooded towels will fit ages infant to about age 7. It's just that simple.

  1. So do these encourage a lot of running around pretending to be superheroes?I know we used to use the hoods of our coats to hold them on and turn them into cloaks and seeing this hooded towel I know it would have been irresistible to me at that age. :)

  2. Looks like this would work even with my limited sewing skills... I remember my sister had one of these when she was a baby. Easier to wrap :D

  6. Good question! I'll have to make one for my nephew and let you know. He's the one most likely to go superhero with it.

  7. I just learned French seams last year and I'm totally addicted. There's something nice about having inside seams look tidy.

  9. Haha. Maybe I'll have to send you a care package one of these days. We can use one of those extra long spa towels and you can be comfy cozy on the couch!
