Dewey's 24 Hour Read-a-Thon: Hours 21-24

Local Time : 6:00 a.m. MST

Whew! That was a rough stretch. I took a cat nap, but then managed to keep nodding off in my book for about the last half hour. Darian did get woken back up by his dad around 4:30 AM, but then disappeared back up to his bedroom before long. Apparently he got confused and thought the read-a-thon ended at 5 AM, so he went back up to bed. But...we're all caught up now, so Darian's stats have been added in.

Here's how we did!

Books Completed Since Last Update : None
How I'm Feeling : Wiped out. Ready for sleep.
Snacks Eaten : None.
Other Things Accomplished : Falling asleep repeatedly in my book.

Remaining End of Event Meme Questions :

1. Which hour was most daunting for you?
Hour 24. I fought that one hard. I think I nodded off at least ten times just in the last twenty minutes.

2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a reader engaged for next year?
Based on this time, I would say that sticking to Young Adult fiction is probably the way to go. It reads easier and faster, so falling asleep is less likely and the books keep moving well. For my picks I'd go with Amy & Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson, the Ruby Oliver series by E. Lockhart, Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor, and then anything by either John Green or Rainbow Rowell.

3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-Thon next year?
I think it's organized really well. I just need to work better at visiting other blogs. Right now, the plan is to hit them up later today (after I sleep for a bit), but next time I'd like to set aside an hour or two just for checking out everyone else's progress.

4. What do you think worked really well in this year's Read-a-Thon?
The social media aspect was awesome this time around. Twitter was nuts and Instagram was really wonderful. I liked seeing everyone's read-a-thons through pictures.

5. Which books did you read?

6. Which book did you enjoy most?
All of my completed reads were pretty darned good, but I like Ruby Oliver (Real Live Boyfriends) the best.

7. Which did you enjoy least?
Right now, I'm not enjoying The Virgin Suicides all that much, but part of that's just because I'm tired and Jeffrey Eugenides tends to ramble some.

8. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-Thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?
I'll definitely be participating next time. I think I'll probably be a reader and a cheerleader next time. Participating as a cheerleader for a couple of hours will let me make the rounds and feel a little more engaged than I managed this time. Plus, I think it's nice for readers to hear from others. I know I appreciated everyone who came over and commented on my posts or responded to my tweets and photos. It's good to feel like part of the community rather than just a crazy reader.

Pages Read Since Last Update : 51 pages
Total Pages Read : 464 pages / 1500 pages

Books Completed Since Last Update : 0
Total Books Finished : 2 books / 3 books

Books Completed Since Last Update : None
How I'm Feeling : Awake and ready for NOT doing read-a-thon (It's. 4pm on Sunday.)
Snacks Eaten : None.
Other Things Accomplished : Sleep.

Remaining End of Event Meme Questions :

1. Which hour was most daunting for you?
23 because I was really tired and even though I'd already been sleeping for three hours I was still in the sleep mode.

2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a reader engaged for next year?
No. (He's really being helpful here. Can you tell?)

3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-Thon next year?
Make the mini-challenges be able to keep you awake more. (I asked if he had any specific ideas. He said no. See...helpful.)

4. What do you think worked really well in this year's Read-a-Thon?
Our snack table. That worked really good.

5. Which books did you read?
Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, On the Day I Died, and Darkwater

6. Which book did you enjoy most?
Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist

7. Which did you enjoy least?
Darkwater. It's kind of slow paced. The idea of it is kind of cool, but it's kind of boring.

8. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-Thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?
Pretty likely. Sleeper. (Ugh. Really?) (He then said, "No. Not really.")

As a reminder, I'm still participating in another read-a-thon as we speak! The Wonderfully Wicked Read-a-Thon is currently underway!!

  1. I might think about being a Cheerleader in April as well. I seem to fare better in spring as far as staying up and keeping my energy levels high, and one of the things I always struggle with during a 24-hour readathon is actually getting round people to say hi, even people I already follow regularly! I didn't manage to do much on Twitter either, as it moved so fast over the day that every time I went back there'd be another 200 tweets!

Aaaaaanyway, congratulations on an amazing page count - and to Darian too, when he gets up! - and I completely agree that easy reading is vital for those last few hours in a readathon. I'm lucky enough that it ends at 1pm here, so full daylight AND busy lunchtime, but even so I need a well paced narrative and decent-sized font if I'm going to stand a chance at that point. You did amazingly well, and thoroughly deserve some Sunday morning snoozing and a delicious breakfast to celebrate! :D

    1. We'll see about the cheerleading. I guess it just depends on how many people they have participating on both sides. Thanks for coming over to comment. It's nice to see some familiar faces. :)

  2. I definitely recommend listening to audiobooks while cheering. If you try to get to all of the blogs on the list you get, it takes up WAY WAY WAY more time that I expected. I never got a chance to visit my regular blog list/friends and that stunk for me. I felt like I missed out on those I care about, though I did still have fun. I like cheering, it just is a lot of work, not enough cheerleaders!

I'm glad that you had a good time. Sorry I didn't get to come by more during! Missed your updates!

    1. I still haven't tried audiobooks. I don't know why. Something feels weird about them. One of these days I'll quit being such a weenie.
